Eliminate pathogens

In the meantime, to protect against germs, soak a completely dry terracotta pot in a solution of 10 parts water and one part bleach.

However, avoid combining bleach and vinegar as this can be dangerous: the combination of the two can release chlorine gas, which is a health hazard.

To be on the safe side, wait a few hours after wiping the terracotta pot with a cloth and rinse the pot again with bleach water.

After thoroughly mixing the water and bleach solution, soak the pot for 30 minutes, then wash it thoroughly and dry it in the sun. Do not stack wet terracotta pots on top of each other as this may cause them to explode.
